The Entertainer.... Dave the Rave

On my latest call to Rossington Labour Club, I heard the sounds of a male female duo by the name of Tabu Tony, guitar and vocalist and andrea vocalist , boast several years experience in the entertainment business. For the past three summer seasons Tabu have been resident at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, which is not too far from their home town of Wigan. At Rossington Labour club Tony and Andrea performed songs which included Loco in Acapulco, Two hearts, All that she wants, and Baby come back. Both halves of this duo perform well and have the art of winning over their audience. Tabu produced a good overall sound and provided a most pleasing set that I enjoyed listening to.

Every year we are entertained about this time by the boy/girl duo TABU and this year was no exception and as always they put on a sparkling night of entertainment. Tony and Andrea just go from strength to strength and are just about to embark on their tenth consecutive season at Blackpool's famous Winter Gardens. You don't get a job like that for so long without having a ton of ability and this pair really have. In addition to this they are two of the nicest people in the business. Thanks again Tony and Andrea for another very special night.

The Concert room was just beginning to fill up nicely when Chorley based Tabu took the stage. Tony & Andrea work their socks off to provide a show that is as appealing to the eye as it is on the ear. As in keeping with most other modern duos. This popular pair perform all the club standards like Don't Cry for Me Argentina, Dance The Night Away and Young Hearts Run Free. Musical talent runs in the family with Tony's brother Colin, instantly recognisable to club goers as front man with top band Whizz Kid. A big hit with the Blackpool holiday makers Tabu can be found working at The Victoria Bar in The Winter Gardens throughtout the summer season.

To some people working 24 hours a day, seven days a week with your spouse would be strictly taboo - but for Andrea and Tony Robinson it's more a case of being strictly Tabu. "It's fine by us - we don't mind at all and we very rarely argue," says Andrea. "And there's always plenty to talk about - different venues, new material, things like that," says Tony. "And we have a mutual passion for golf - so we even share the same hobby when we are off stage." "You can count the arguments we've had on one hand - and they've usually been in the recording studio," says Andrea. "He's quicker than me." As Tabu they are celebrating 10 years' association with the Winter Gardens - originally in The Arena (when it was briefly Caesar's Palace then the Planet Room) and for the last seven years in the Victoria Bar - where they have built a loyal following. "The act we do in summer in Blackpool is a different one to the social club act we have for winter months," says Tony. "Over the years though we have built a real loyalty for the room - and it's great when people come back and ask if we remember them." "Except when they expect us to remember their favourite song as well - that can get a bit awkward," says Andrea. Tony has been performing for about 20 years and the couple have played for more than 16 - originally as a duo, then as part of a five piece and back to being a duo. They met through the business - Andrea's sister was a singer and her manager also managed Tony's group. "We auditioned Andrea - and she failed!" admits Tony. "But I thought she had potential - and, of course, I was right - in more ways than one!" "He actually said I sang like Diana Ross - with a Wigan accent," laughs Andrea. So he left his job at British Aerospace, she turned professional - and the rest is showbusiness and marital history. For their Blackpool summer seasons they include a cross section of material from the 60's to the 90's - and a fair slice of patter and humour. "But when we do the clubs it's more modern and a lot faster moving," says Tony. "We prefer the Blackpool atmosphere because people can interact and they actually want to hear us. In the clubs you tend to be musical wallpaper - though they would miss you if you weren't on." But after so long performing - and 10 years in Blackpool - do they ever fancy something else? Perhaps a sunnier climate? "We admit we've played it safe but we've always enjoyed what we do," says Tony. "We know we are never going to be the next Pop Stars or Pop Idols but we wouldn't want to be." "But we've always kept in work and had time off when we've wanted it," says Andrea. With a ready repertoire of up to 60 songs and a few hundred more they could call upon with "a bit of revision" they are rarely stumped for choice. "It's odd because we keep finding we can dust down the old stuff when it comes round again," says Tony. "We were doing The Tide is High when Blondie had it - now we just say it's Atomic Kitten's!" Tabu can be seen and heard in the Winter Gardens Victoria Bar every Monday to Saturday night and Saturday afternoons.

The Intake Social Club in Doncaster was visited byLancashires Boy/Girl duo TABU who are managed by International Artiste Management & agency Ltd. Using Lightshow & minidisc, they kicked off their first spot with Ricky Martins "Livin La Vida Loca." With Tony Robinson on guitar and sharing lead vocals with the Lovely Andrea, this very busy twosome impressed the audience with their vocals and harmonies for the songs of Ronan Keating, Candi Staton, Bonnie Tyler, Westlife and Will Young. If you holiday in Blackpool, pay a visit to the theatre bar in the Winter Gardens, where you will see the duo entertain holidaymakers during the summer season. Tony, who is the brother of Colin Robinson, the lead singer of the rock band Whizzkid, had a great sense of humour which was certainly appreciated by the Intake crowd, and the ever smiling and very professional Tabu closed the spot with "Reach for the stars".
